What to Expect During a Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation

Are you suffering from hearing loss?

Hearing loss might be caused by a variety of health problems. If you or your child has been referred for a diagnostic Audiological evaluation, hearing loss must be ruled out first. If you do not pass an initial hearing screening, you may require a diagnostic hearing assessment.

The evaluation is intended to discover whether hearing loss exists, and if so, what type of hearing loss it is, and how severe it is. It helps us in determining the source of hearing loss as well as providing information on how to proceed with treatment.

What type of hearing test should I expect?

Hearing tests are designed to find out what type of hearing loss you are suffering from and its severity. The type of test can depend on age, the condition of the middle and outer ear, and other factors. One of the most common forms of testing is an audiogram.

The Audiogram

During an audiogram, the audiologist will ask you to identify different sounds, such as beeps, clicks, or tones. This can be done in a sound booth or in an open field. The loudness of the sound and the pitch (high or low) will be varied to determine your range of hearing. This test is important for identifying the severity and type of hearing loss you have.

Other types of hearing tests include:

  • Tympanometry
  • Acoustic Reflex Testing
  • Otoacoustic Emissions
Allergies to springtime pollen and outdoor triggers
Allergy skin test

Allergy Testing

There are many different allergy types out there and the best way to find out which allergens you are allergic to is to get tested. Although no allergy test is perfect, your doctor should be able to tell you what you are allergic to after being tested.
